Your point is well taken and I agree that you must have your eyes open. Being focused on your dreams and goals should never be to the exclusion of being aware of your surroundings. A blind eye, denial or believing everything you read or hear are all equally dangerous. My guess is that the savvy investors are mindful of the news and positioning themselves to make good purchases at bargain prices. The key is to learn to differentiate between the hype and the reality. And right now the hype is really extreme. At the core of getting beyond the propaganda is to understand who benefits. The media benefits from selling fear that locks people into the news and generates more advertising dollars and the politician use fear to create the urgency to promote their agenda. This also applies to marketing and sales as well.

Experience has taught me that the only constant is change. Things are always changing which is why it's important to learn to see clearly and to embrace change. The economy is going through signifcant change which is creating great opportunities for people who do not get consumed with fear. For those who stay alert and positive, I'm confident they will do well. It may take longer or a different path, but in the end they will prevail. (Caveate: Success is not always what we expect it to be. Sometimes getting laid off is a blessing that allows people to change careers into something they love instead of something they have outgrown. The time that it is difficult for people is when they want things to stay the same and are not open to change. That is when it is painful.)

I wish you the best of luck with the future (change) and am confident that your clients will be well served by your vigilance and wisdom.

A quick comment...
Although the economy is no where near as poor as the depression there is some validity to the fear that people have. My day job is in the securites industry and I've watched some of my clients savings get cut in half in a few short months, I have a client who loses MILLIONS of dollars a day due to the current market. That is terrifying to see. I've learned two things working in the securities industry 1. What goes up must always come down and 2. Change is nearly always GOOD

Focused and driven people will always succeed, as they always have. But they will not succeed by turning a blind eye to what is happening in the world and in the economy. They must change and evolve and always be one step ahead of the trend. People who are so focused on their goals and dreams and are not thinking ahead will not succeed in any market.

Hi Kris: I'm glad you sent me this article, it's a bunch of hype. I have been actively looking, but have no bites yet, but it's coming. My father has bought into the hype and he has been discouraging. But I 'm putting that all behind me, looking forward to accomplishing my dream.

Dear Kris,
Thank you for confirming the facts and not running on emotions. Unfortunately, many people have not heard these facts from the media and have bought into the fear. As you said, this perpetuates the myth that this is the worst economy since the Great Depression. My husband and I were really impressed by your article.

Our daughter graduated from Spa Tech in Westbrook. She is very busy at the Spa where she works and has even convinced her boss to add new product lines and programs, despite the "worst economy since the 1920s."

Thanks again for your voice of reason.

Mary,

Thank you for your kind words. We are much more into helping our students succeed than into self-promotion or marketing.

Our success is truly measured by the success of our students. I'm thrilled to hear things are going well for you. And of course, it is a reflection of your commitment and skill. Keep up the great work and if there is anything we can do to help you succeed, please let me know.

Another area that you may be interested in if you are not already part of it, is connecting through Facebook. Spa Tech Institute has several pages on Facebook for Fan and Group and I would love to stay connected personally as well. If you are not on Facebook yet, I highly recommend it. I also recommend setting up a Fan Page for your business as well. It's a great way to stay connected and get additional support. I also set up a new group today called We Can Fix the Economy with the intent of getting more people involved with focusing on positive outcomes. I would love to have your energy and input on these if you are inclined.

Be well and continue to prosper,
Kris

Dear Kris,

When I first saw the headline of your article on the state of the economy I held my breath - afraid that you were going to speak from a partisan side. Didn't matter which side, just that the writing would be from one side. So many wonderful programs alienate part of their public by assuming everyone is already agreeing with them. But alas! You have managed to state the obvious with absolutely no partisanship. Relief settled in at the beginning of the article, of course, Kris would NOT be thinking along those lines. Instead you reinforce my innate knowledge that I have a prosperous and joyful birthright. Thank you!

Kris, I have been meaning to write you and share some of what I have learned since graduating Spa Tech.

Downeast School of Massage is a very good school, but their graduates are fearful of injuring their bodies. They shy away from abundant sessions feeling that by keeping things in some kind of reserve they will last longer or something.

In working alongside Downeast graduates I know they teach their students good body mechanics, but it seems they have been taught fear of injury instead of the joy of giving a good massage. I can still hear Jerry saying, "If you don't feel great after giving a massage you are doing something wrong and need to stop until you figure it out." My Spa Tech instructors were vigilant about body mechanics, but did not instill fear of giving my best. I soon realized that after giving 4 massages in clinic I was more apt to have the energy to go dancing that evening than if I had spent a day at the office!

Even before I enrolled in Spa Tech I had heard that Downeast was the best. I now realize that part of what Downeast teaches their students is, "You are at THE BEST school." So of course, graduates and everyone they speak to hears that Downeast is the best school. And I now know that is the only reason for that comment.

Kris, I am blessed that I went to Spa Tech for it was my 3rd choice! First I wanted Downeast because it was "THE BEST", then I wanted the school in Lewiston because I would also become a Reiki Master, and I settled for Spa Tech. The word "Polarity" did not mean anything to me.

Well, I've met a few students from the Lewiston school and I would not want to be where they are...

I know some of these things because I manage "Midcoast Body Workers" and set up meetings and training sessions.

I know you have heard this before, but I want to say that whenever someone asks me where I went to school I am proud to tell. (Although sometimes it is a bit messy with the name changes of the school - but all the names have a good reputation!).(smile)

Please know I am not intending to put down any other school, only to thank you for the wonderful education I received at Spa Tech.

Keep up the good work,
Mary Maverick, Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master/Teacher
