Why Spas are Succeeding in an Uncertain Economy

We have been hearing that people are doing well and this article in the NY Times confirms some interesting findings from spa industry leaders that supports what we have been hearing from our graduates.
The bottom line is that the current levels of stress are sending people to spas and clinics for stress reduction and well being instead of just pampering. Whereas the benefits of the pampering were appreciated during good times, the realization that coping with stress was essential, is changing the way the industry markets to clients. It also holds powerful ramifications for the future.
With the view that massage and spa treatments are a necessity instead of a luxury, the long term prospects for the industry take on new proportions. What has happened is a change in behavior on a fundamental level. Once behavior is changed, it is an enduring change. It also creates an even more loyal clientele who will be likely to refer others in the future.
Because of the length and depth of the recession and the amount of money that has been pumped into the system, when the economy starts to increase again, it could be dramatic. I expect the pace will pick up even more and the stress levels will continue to increase dramatically. As people try to make up for lost time the pressure to succeed will be even greater and people will need even better support systems. And that is going to increase the demand for massage, polarity and spa professionals.
Remembering that it is still a relatively low percentage of the population that realizes the value of this work is very exciting. It means there is still tremendous upside to the growth of the industry. And to see how well the industry has held up during economic stress is really exciting. It had never really been tested as severely as during this economy. But the word we still are hearing from many of our graduates (particularly those who have their own businesses) is that they are busier than ever.
Again, this does not mean that there are not practitioners or companies that are not having problems. Recessions always expose the weak and reward the strong. When some companies are thriving in a down economy it highlights that it is not the industry that has a problem, it’s the company or person who is struggling who needs to go to the next level.
This is why the school offers this blog as well as many CEU classes, the Merit Scholarship, RYSE and a 20% tuition credit for all of our graduates so they can continue to improve their skills in all areas. We know that continuing to learn and grow is essential to retaining and attracting new clients. Self-care is also incredibly important since being healthy, positive and uplifting is essential to giving your clients the best possible experience.
For people who have been thinking about becoming a massage or polarity therapist, aesthetician or cosmetologist, the future remains bright. The people who have been successfully doing this for 3 or more years are going to see their business expand dramatically in the coming years. They are going to need help. And the government has increased Federal Financial Aid because it knows that people need education to get better jobs. The really great thing about these industries is that they can never be replaced by the Internet or outsourcing.
So keep up the great work, continue to increase your skills and you will continue to prosper and help others to do the same.
Sincerely,
Kris
I completely agree. I feel so blessed to say, I have continued to remain extremely busy. I also agree that pursuing CEUs is a great idea. I find that one of the keys to my success has been the ability to offer diverse services (eg deep tissue, Swedish, Reiki, Reflexology, etc.)allowing me to appeal to a wider variety of people and also to cater to those who one day might want an intense deep tissue massage to help with their rotator cuff issues, but the next might want a Reiki session to deal with the stress of being out of work from that same rotator cuff injury. Doing different modalities also makes work more interesting.
I have also noticed an increase in the half hour session. People aren’t wanting to spend as much money but they want to get body work done so they are booking more half hour sessions. Personally, I love this as it caters to my somewhat short attention span and 2 half hour sessions generally produce more income that one hour session in the same time slot. Plus, I get to see more awesome people in the course of a day!

HI,
I have been grandfathered in for my massage license, however I would like to take some CEU and would like to know what you have available?
I did take massage at the Polarity Realization Institute awhile back.
Thanks
Elaine
Thoughtprovoking article. I am a Polarity Therapist traveling through a part of our world that barely knows that massage is good for you! The financial stresses are felt differently also as this was never a wealthy success oriented area.
There are few opportunities to reeducate beyond my initial training, and I find myself planning my summer around the few and far between (hundreds of miles) schools that offer CEUs in other disciplines. I have also traded knowledge with someone in Apache Nation in a less “accredited” way. These interweavings have been very important in two ways: The stimulus of trained practitioners with different viewpoints has enlivened me; and having a choice of small ways of touching people that encourage them to have an entire session. The works does as it does, and referrals are almost beside the point.
Kris, Good article. This is so true. Good practitioners are busy. Spas and Clinics are busy.
It is so important that Spa Owners and therapists congratulate clients on the stress reducing leaps they are taking. The therapist should point out to their clients how well they are dealing with their stress as well as invite their clients to learn more about how their sessions are reducing stress and improving the quality of life.

Elaine,
I remember you. Great to hear from you. Which locatioin are you closest to now?
If you look at http://spatech.edu under education you will see a listing of CEU classes. If you have questions about what may be a good fit for you now, please let me know. If you are on Facebook you can look me up and communicate there or respond to this email. I would have to check the schedules to see what’s ahead. You will need to remind me which program you took so I can be sure to point you in the right direction.
Please confirm that you have received this email since I’m not positive that these messages are going out through the blog correctly.
Thanks for contacting me.
Kris
Interesting application of the work and the challenges you are facing. Different areas have such incredibly different dynamics. It’s truly fascinating.
You have opportunities to manifest on so many levels. It appears you are in a situation that gives you a lot of opportunity to focus on finding a connection to Source. It’s a great challenge but also there can be a lot more energy available in areas that are less developed.
Keep up the good work. I’m sure your contribution is life changing for many people.
